Our Mission

The Samaritan Center for Medical Research (SCMR) is located in Los Gatos, California, in the heart of Silicon Valley. SCMR was established for the sole purpose of conducting all phases of clinical trials. The Center was established in 2005 by founder and principal investigator, Maia U. Chakerian, M.D. Since 1993, Dr. Chakerian has directed and participated in numerous clinical trials, both as a faculty member of the Pain Center at the University of California San Diego Medical Center, and since 1994 as a private practitioner specializing in pain medicine in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Indications Purpose Eligibility
Herniated lumbosacral disc To assess the effect of injection of investigational product into the nucleus pulposus (center) of a herniated L4-5 or L5-S1 disc versus sham injection as measured by changes in leg pain. Male and female subjects 30-70 years of age with lumbar disc herniation (L4-5 or L5-S1) with sciatica in either leg for ≥ 6 weeks and < 1 year.
Corticosteroid Lumbar Epidural Analgesia for Radiculopathy (C.L.E.A.R.) To evaluate the analgesic effect of a single transforaminal epidural injection of SP-102 on leg pain due to a herniated lumbar disc versus a placebo intramuscular injection. Adults aged 18-70 years with a current episode of unilateral leg pain present for at least 6 weeks and no longer than 9 months.

We are adjacent to El Camino Hospital of Los Gatos, CA, and work closely with Good Samaritan Hospital in San Jose, CA, where we have performed inpatient pain trials.  The office is within an easy drive from downtown San Jose and the San Jose International Airport.  We are conveniently located along public transportation routes.

Dr. Chakerian has hospital appointments at two nearby full-service inpatient hospitals, Good Samaritan Hospital in San Jose, CA, and El Camino Hospital in Los Gatos and Mountain View, CA, allowing for inpatient and outpatient studies.
